I grew up in Kailua. For the most part its a sleepy bedroom community. It's attraction as a destination is focused on Kailua Beach, a beautiful 3 mile stretch of sand made for lounging. Once you get to the Windward side of the island, access is easy. There are numerous public accesses and dedicated beach parks to walk down to the shore making parking a non-issue, especially during the week. This is a great beach for renting a kayak for a couple hours and cruising around the bay. There's Flat Island which can easily be paddled to and around, or for a slightly longer endeavor we could kayak out to the Mokes (Mokulua Islands). It's a fairly peacful beach with regards to the surf. It can get windy so there's also the opportunity to windsurf, or at least take a windsurfing lesson. In general, there's a ton of open space and sand along the entire three miles, which makes it a very opportune place for a number of beach activities.
Jeralyn and I are headed over there once for sure to hit up not only the beach, but a friend of mine's eatery, Uahi Grill. There isn't an easy way to get to Kailua without a car, so if anybody's interested we will coordinate.
